چکیده

The necessity of on-farm research to assess the relationship between shade ecological features and yields has been broadly recognised. On this basis, a more sustainable coffee system could be developed, with better conservation of natural resources. An on-farm research project was conducted in the municipality of Chilón, Chiapas, Mexico, with the objectives of investigating the effect of shade structure on coffee grain yield and assessing the potential uses of associated plant species. Results showed that shade cover percentage and coffee shrub density had significant effects on yields. Maintaining coffee shrub density as a constant, a regression equation related yield to percentage shade by a quadratic polynomial. Coffee density had a significant effect on yields but shade tree density had no effect. Coffee cultivar, age of coffee stand, species richness, shade tree density, basal area, slope and aspect did not have significant effects on coffee yields. Shade tree cover had a positive effect between 23 and 38% shade cover and yield was then maintained up to 48%. Production may decrease under shade cover >50%. A total of 61 shade species were found, with an average density of 260 trees per hectare, the majority of them being indigenous species, used as food, construction materials and as firewood. The role of ecological features associated with shade on yields and availability of natural resources obtained from coffee systems are discussed. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Woody plant diversity and structure of shade-grown-coffee plantations in northern Chiapas, Mexico.

Shade-grown coffee is an agricultural system that contains some forest-like characteristics. However, structure and diversity are poorly known in shade coffee systems. In 61 coffee-growers' plots of Chiapas, Mexico, structural variables of shade vegetation and coffee yields were measured, recording species and their use. Coffee stands had five vegetation strata. Seventy seven woody species most...

Avian Foraging Behavior in Two Different Types of Coffee Agroecosystem in Chiapas, Mexico

This study describes the foraging ecology of birds during summer and winter in two different types of coffee agroecosystems in Chiapas, Mexico. Avian foraging behavior is documented in two agroecosystems of differing management intensity, structurally similar but with different levels of floristic diversity, during summer and winter seasons. The distribution of tree species used by birds was mo...

Environmental and Economic Aspects of Agro-forestry and Agricultural Systems in Chiapas, Mexico

Since traditional cost-benefit analysis does not include environmental variables in consideration, the concept of emergy was used to measure all direct and indirect energy to produce a product. In emergy analysis, environmental, social and economic variables are included and indexes are calculated for comparison for several systems. In this paper, emergy and financial ratios are used to determi...

Field-testing ecological and economic benefits of coffee certification programs.

Coffee agroecosystems are critical to the success of conservation efforts in Latin America because of their ecological and economic importance. Coffee certification programs may offer one way to protect biodiversity and maintain farmer livelihoods. Established coffee certification programs fall into three distinct, but not mutually exclusive categories: organic, fair trade, and shade. The resul...

Twig-Nesting Ants: The Hidden Predators of the Coffee Berry Borer in Chiapas, Mexico

Coffee is a globally important crop that is subject to numerous pest problems, many of which are partially controlled by predatory ants. Yet several studies have proposed that these ecosystem services may be reduced where agricultural systems are more intensively managed. Here we investigate the predatory ability of twignesting ants on the main pest of coffee, the coffee berry borer (Hypothenem...
